“Ubomi Obutsha”, translating to “New Life” in English, is more than just a name; it’s a promise of hope and renewal for the community we serve. Located in Kwazakhele, Gqeberha, the Ubomi Obutsha Centre (UOC) is dedicated to transforming the lives of vulnerable families through a comprehensive approach that combines immediate aid with long-term development and support.

At Ubomi Obutsha, we envision a community where poverty’s grip is loosened and families are empowered to stand tall and resilient. Through equipping vulnerable families with the tools they need to thrive independently, they are able to lead a more stable lifestyle, walk with confidence, and become a beacon of hope within their community.

Our work is driven by three core values:

1: Family Cohesion: We are firm believers in the strength of family unity. Through engaging workshops and activities like family days, we nurture stronger, more connected families.

2: Family Resilience: Life’s challenges are inevitable, by developing the framework needed to face these difficulties head-on, families and individuals are able to overcome them with courage and determination.

3: Family Self-Sustainability: Independence is our ultimate goal. Through home food gardens, education support, job readiness programmes, and business mentoring, we are able to help families carve out their own paths to success.

These values are the heartbeat of the UOC, ensuring that families are not just surviving but thriving, becoming active contributors to their own success stories and moving away from the indignity of dependence on handouts - A new beginning for families.

Understanding that poverty is multifaceted, we offer a range of holistic support to our families:

  • Basic Needs: Immediate relief through food parcels, clothing, and essential home items.

  • Family Development: Strengthening family bonds and promoting positive parenting through interactive workshops and family assignments.

  • Education Support: From early childhood development and academic support to school supplies and life skills training, we pave the way for children’s bright futures.

  • Social and Spiritual Support: We are here to listen and understand. Offering counseling and spiritual guidance to nurture the mind and soul.

  • Self-Sustainability: Empowering families with the skills to grow their own food, secure employment, and possibly start a business of their own, fostering independence.

Staff members and dedicated volunteers

All that we do here at Ubomi Obutsha is powered by a passionate team of 12 full-time staff members and a number of dedicated volunteers. Together, we are able to provide personalised support to those in need. We are firm believers in the power of community and encourage those who share the same outlook to join us in our mission. Volunteering, donations, and active participation are the lifeblood of our work.

How You Can Help

The journey to ‘New Life’ is one that we invite you to take together with us. Whether you can offer your time, financial support, or material goods, your contribution will be utilised to make a profound difference in the lives of those who not only need it, but are on this transformative path to self improvement and sustainability at UOC.

The Ubomi Obutsha Centre is more than a support system; it’s a foundational shift, a catalyst for change, and a source of hope for many. By focusing on family cohesion, resilience, and self-sustainability, we are bringing about impactful changes in the lives of families within the impoverished Kwazakhele community.
